Air Source Heat Pumps

How do they work?

ASHP
Think of an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) as a super smart heater for your home. It works like a sponge, by absorbing heat from the outside air even in temperatures as low as -20 degrees.

The fan within the heat pump pulls air over a heat exchanger containing refrigerant which is always 7°C lower than the outside ambient air temperature. Due to this difference, approximately 3°C of this is absorbed into the refrigerant which is then increased by the highly efficient heat pump compressor and transferred into the heating and hot water system via an additional heat exchanger.

This is called the refrigeration cycle and works in reverse to the refrigerator in your home. Although it uses electricity to do this, it is very little meaning it produces more power than it consumes resulting in low running costs.

Do Air Source Pumps really reduce running costs?

When done right – sized, installed, and maintained perfectly – these systems can be game-changers. On average, their high efficiency levels can lower your heating bills by 20-70%, depending on your particular circumstances.

But here’s the real deal: Our team values honesty. If we reckon a heat pump system won’t pocket you those considerable savings, we’ll let you know straight up. Unless of course, your heart is set on it for its eco-friendly benefits.
With every quote we provide, you’ll receive an energy performance estimate. It’s like a crystal ball showing you the running costs of your current system versus the new heat pump. That way, you can make the best call for your home and bank account.

HERE’S A NEAT FACT!

For every 1kW your heat pump munches on, it generously gives back up to 3kW for your heating and hot water.

How’s that for efficiency?

Installation times will vary from home to home and depends on the amount of radiators and the size of the property, but we understand that upheaval to your home can be extremely stressful which is why we allocate the right amount of man power to ensure that every system is installed in a timely manner and to the highest standard, not without leaving your home just the way we found it. Below is an approximate guide but during a survey we will be able to determine the definite timescale to allow you to plan ahead.

  • Boiler only replacement – 1/2 day – 1 full day
  • Full new central heating system installation – 1-2 days
  • Air Source Heat Pump system installation – 1-3 days

In most cases, yes, as to give you the right amount of heat in your home, they need to be bigger, but we are honest and if we think any radiators are in good condition and could be used to cover the heat demand in another room them we will always give you the option of this.

You will not necessarily need to replace your thermostat, but it is often advisable to upgrade your heating controls. They are relatively inexpensive and modern controls are more accurate and better able to maintain an even temperature within the home. They also give you more flexibility so that you can use your heating more efficiently.

Our mindful surveyors carefully consider pipe routes and all of our installers carry their own vacuum cleaners and dust sheets, leaving your home just as clean as they found it. We ensure everything we remove from your home is cleared away and recycled where possible. Our quality management procedures ensure we take the greatest care with all aspects of your installation.

All systems fitted by us carry a minimum comprehensive two-year warranty on all parts and labour (subject to terms and conditions). Many manufacturers offer five year guarantees with some offering up to ten years, and you can also take out extended warranties. Existing pipework and radiators, for example, are not covered by the warranty but if a problem arises we will endeavour to solve it for you. We are only ever a phone call away.

Yes, in fact they are up to 400% efficient. Here’s a neat fact, for every 1kW your heat pump uses, it generously gives back up to 3kW for your heating & hot water. How’s that for efficiency?

To tell if an air source heat pump is right for you, there are a few key questions to consider:

Do you have somewhere to put it? You will need a place outside your home where the heat pump can be fitted at ground level, not underneath a bedroom or living room window. It will also need plenty of space around it to get a good flow of air and for servicing.

Is your home well insulated? Since air source heat pumps work best when producing heat at a lower temperature than traditional boilers, it’s essential that your home is well insulated and draught-proofed for the heating system to be most efficient.

What fuel will you be replacing? The system will pay for itself much more quickly if it’s replacing an electricity, coal or oil heating system. Heat pumps may not be the best option for homes using mains gas.

From 1 December 2011 the installation of an air source heat pump on domestic premises is considered to be permitted development, not needing an application for planning permission, provided ALL the limits and conditions listed in this link are met. https://www.planningportal.co.uk/permission/common-projects/heat-pumps/planning-permission-air-source-heat-pump

There are many factors that affect the price of installing a heat pump in your home but with the help of grant funding, this can help pay for more than half of the quote price.
